ReplyDeleteIn my school the 6th graders are responsible for collecting the paper recycling bins out of each classroom. They weigh it and graph the results each week. It helps to get the students involved and active in the recycling process.
To keep myself and my classroom more green, I reused many of my older items and refreshed them with paint or duck tape, even come card board boxes!

I make a big deal about recycling. At my home, we recycle everything! But at school the only thing recycled is paper. I collect the plastic and cardboard and bring it home to recycle. I could sure use the boxes!!

I think teaching our kids to be more responsible and to be proactive when it comes to recycling!
ReplyDeleteI think starting early, making the aware of the importance of recycling and smart use of resources is key. They LOVE it, too!!
ReplyDeleteWe don't have a full recycle system in place, but there are a few items we recycle (plastic water bottles, cans, ink cartridges, etc). Our PTO purchased water dispenser service for us last year and that has cut down on the water bottles tremendously! :)
ReplyDeleteMy advice is to start small. Last year, we started with a lesson on taking shopping bags to the grocery store. Then, we added a paper recycling bin. It is easier for kids to learn the routine and not get overwhelmed if you introduce things slowly. :)

We do recycle at our school, but just mixed paper and cardboard. Youth 2000 (a group of exemplary 4th and 5th graders pick up the recycling in all the classrooms every Monday). I try to make my classroom green by reusing as many items as I can.

I think the biggest difference teachers can make is planting the seed that we need to recycle, reuse and reduce the amount of resources we use. Our county has a recycling program but I don't think everyone uses it to its full potential.
ReplyDeleteWe make a big deal about recycling in Title 1. We have a paper recycling box right at our door. The kids and I use it all the time!

My best tip is to constantly make your students aware of their environment and what we all can do to protect it. We recycle everyday!!
ReplyDeleteI reuse a lot of containers and objects in my classroom. My students always enjoy the "new" things we are using usually has manipulatives.
ReplyDeleteOne of the favorites are the plastic Christmas lightbulb covers from a strand of lights that don't work. They are big and easy to hold and are fun for the kiddos to use.
A second favorite and very easy to come by are the caps to markers that are used up and dried out. We keep a container of the caps and use them as playing pieces for games, counters, and for sorting.
My school participates in the Feed the Bin program and I always encourage my students to Feed the Bin. If we won these bins it would really help our recycling efforts because that program only accepts paper and I have all of the kiddos recycling other items and we don't have a good space for them now.
Getting the students involved would help!!

ReplyDeleteI keep a basket where we can reuse scraps of paper for other things ... other art/craft projects or to take quick notes. I even have a couple kids that in order for them to stay focused on the lesson, they need to be doodling. They can pick up scrap paper to doodle on while I instruct.

And no, we don't have a true recycling program in place. Many of the cardboard boxes, etc. I take home to put in my recycling. My school has the blue recycling cans ... but it is being used more as a trash can than recycling can.

The First Grade Jungle Room
I started recycling in my school about 2 years ago. We have recycling stations set up around the school. The custodian helps us out by emptying them frequently into the recycling dumpsters out back. We only do paper now, but we do have a can station in the teacher's lounge.

We've been doing a limited amount of recycling at my school. This gives me a boost to try and raise the bar.
ReplyDeleteWe do not have a recycling program at our school. My students have started their own "Reuse" part - they ask for the cardboard and boxes that supplies come in and they create a multitude of projects with them.
ReplyDeleteWe recycle paper into color-coded bins, we have bins for large pieces and bins for scraps. So if students need a small piece for a detail part, they can grab it from the recycled scrap paper bin.
ReplyDeleteWhat I do for my kindergarteners is recycle handouts. There are many times that many of us run too many copies of a worksheet. I place these unused copies in my color basket and my kids re-use the papers for the beautiful pieces of art!
